Description:

The Parent-Child Home Program is a research-based and research-validated school readiness, early literacy and parenting program, which for forty years has been successfully utilizing intensive home visiting to help families challenged by poverty, limited education, homelessness, recent immigration, and/or literacy and language-barriers to prepare their children to enter school ready to be successful students and to continue to be successful in school through high school graduation.

Evaluation Information:

The Parent-Child Home Program serves 6500 families per year, at an average cost of $2500-$2750 per child per year. Evaluations of the Program have found: lasting increases in IQ scores; scores above national norms on the California Achievement Test in the second, fifth, and seventh grades; and significantly increased school readiness scores for free-lunch eligible students. In a 2002 South Carolina study, 93% of free-lunch-eligible Program graduates passed the state's first grade skills assessment, compared to only 74% of free-lunch-eligible students state-wide. High school graduation rates were as high as those of middle-class students, a 20% higher rate than other students from low-income families nationally (and 30% higher than the randomized control group in the community studied.)
